The Long View: Republic of Rome

Listen Later

In this episode of The Long View, I'm very pleased to be joined, all the way from Poland, by Adam Ceti as we discuss the old Avalon Hill classic, The Republic of Rome. Join us as we discuss why this title is so memorable, and why you should consider giving it a look. From the intense negotiations of the Senate phase, to the back room dealings and backstabbing, to the desperate struggle to win the battles and wars that always seem to be around the corner, this game is one that offers many unique experiences. Along the way we briefly compare this title to other classic negotiation games such as Diplomacy and Tammany Hall, and discuss the solo game options along with some of Adam's favorite optional rules. Is this old title a game for you? Listen and see for yourself!
As a bonus, I also offer a review of two titles. First up is Fire in the Lake from GMT games at the 1:32:10 mark of the episode, and then a review of the recent hotness Splendor at the 2:07:13 mark of the episode. Is Fire in the Lake the best of the COIN Series? Does it evoke the feel and history of the conflict? Will it make your head explode as if you were an extra from the film Scanners? Was Splendor robbed of its rightful title of game of the year? Is there strategy lurking under the surface of this family game? Find out in these reviews from The Long View.
