Publisher's Summary:
Evicted from the convent, he was taken under the wing of the libertine Don Pedro, the Marquis of Mota, who coached him in skills both courtly and amorous and then employed him as a spy at court. So began a life devoted to giving and receiving pleasure.
To Abrams' Don Juan is no playboy; instead Don Juan's mastery of the arts of passion liberates the women he meets. Through his connections with Don Pedro, he is made an 'hidalgo', an honorary nobleman, and is therefore protected from the wrath of the Inquisition by the King, but his position is precarious.
Then Don Juan embarks on the most perilous adventure of all - he falls in love, and finds that not only his reputation but also his life is in danger.

Quality historical writing
Quick and easy read. Good character development and interesting and reasonably plausible plot. I'd say the historical details were fairly accurate, and I am a historian of the period. The Inaquisitor was a bit too typical, might have been able to make him less evil, but the author follows a long tradition of treating that institution one dimensionally. He might have been better off putting the story back even fifty years later for the development of some of the underlying philosophies.
Good British translation
Good translation! Good reading!
SO Much Better than Byron!
I was so disappointed after reading Byron's Don Juan that I decided to read another book about Don Juan immediately. THIS is the Don Juan I was searching for. Abrams' characters are vibrant and seem to step right off the page and into reality.
Unlike most fictional works dealing with morals, the story itself is never weighed down by the heavy subject matter- even through its exploration of one of man's greatest moral challenges: the dichotomy of love and lust.
Because it DOES explore the many nuances of love and lust, AND is set at the height of the Inquisition, this book is not for everyone.
Don Juan is a skilled lover and a skilled swordsman. While much is left to the imagination in the description of his... swordplay, there are a few passages that some people might find a bit too graphic.
On the flip-side, the Inquisition has its own ways of... questioning its detainees. Some of these passages might prove too graphic for other people.
If you're looking for a great story, a moral challenge, and/or a "how to" book on the art of seduction, I highly recommend this book. If you're uncomfortable with sexuality in general, or uncomfortable with its tenuous relation to religion, you are unlikely to enjoy this particular work.
The truth about Love
Doug Abrams knows how to love a woman, and he weaves this precious
knowledge throughout a beautifully written novel, filled with God, with Goddess and with Spirit, who is alive and well in all those delicious details.
A lifetime of reading has made me a sensitive and discerning 'enjoyer of books'. My passion for love and loving is fanned by reading the words of a man who caresses me with his prose and insight. This book should be required for every boy coming of age. Teach them early, I would pray!

Not just a "chic-flick" book
This book is excellent. Tastefully written - no smut but lots of
intrigue.
