In 1845, Sir John Franklin sailed into the Canadian Arctic with HMS Erebus, HMS Terror, and 129 officers and crew. Their goal was to complete the Northwest Passage. Both ships disappeared, and every member of the expedition died.

Later searches uncovered graves, human remains, a crucial written message, and Inuit testimony describing the expedition's final collapse. More than a century and a half later, the discovery of both shipwrecks transformed the investigation, while modern archaeology and DNA research continue to reveal new details.

The ships have finally been found. But exactly how Franklin's expedition collapsed, and what happened during its desperate final stages, remains incomplete.
