We talked with A. Nathan Scott, a NYC-based composer, producer, and Twitch streamer, discusses his journey from playing bass in rural Colorado to building a sustainable freelance music career producing musical acts and commercial work, including video game scoring and more.
Alex grew up in his dad's recording studio (his dad is a 6 time Grammy nominated artist), started bass at 11, and went full-time in music by 2010. He answered a Craigslist ad for a touring funk band and within months, was on the road playing a jazz fest in New Orleans. At his peak, he was doing 260 shows a year, working with 40+ different artists, covering everything from country gigs to Sublime tribute tours. He couldn't say no to work. Eventually, burnout hit.
This is an honest look at what it takes to make a living in music, not the romanticized version, but the actual grind, pivots, and business decisions that keep you working.
