What happens when you stop waiting for someone else to recognize your worth and start recognizing it yourself?
After an unexpected career setback, I made a decision that would change everything. At 6 AM, I accepted my termination, launched a business I hadn’t planned on starting, and gave myself 90 days to turn an idea into reality.
But building a business wasn’t the only transformation happening.
From navigating single life at a destination wedding in the Dominican Republic to discovering the power of female connection and literally leaving my white coat behind, I was beginning to see just how much I’d grown.
In this episode, I’m sharing what it means to trust yourself, recognize your value, and realize that sometimes the most unexpected endings create opportunities you never would have imagined.
And just when I thought I was finally finding my footing, the universe had another major plot twist waiting for me.
Because sometimes, before you can build the life you’re meant to live, you have to be willing to let go of the one you thought you wanted.
Just when I thought I had finally found some stability, the one thing I never saw coming happened.
After spending nearly two years helping build a concierge aesthetics company, training its injectors, developing its education, and becoming an integral part of the team, I was unexpectedly fired.
Five days earlier, I had gifted the owners a $2,000 Christmas present. Now, I was being told I was terminated, with almost no explanation.
What followed was a series of confusing conversations, an offer to return under a new contract, a shattered evil-eye bracelet, and a discovery that made me question everything I thought I knew about the company I had helped build.
In this episode, I share what happened behind the scenes, the moment I started connecting the dots, and the uncomfortable realization that sometimes the people you trust professionally aren’t necessarily protecting your best interests.
I had just signed a lease, committed to another year in Michigan, and finally felt like I could relax. I didn’t want to start a business. I didn’t want another major life change.
I had just sat down…
But sometimes life doesn’t give you the option to stay comfortable. And remember that astrology prediction about building an “empire”? Well, that could potentially end up coming true.
At a time when almost everything in my life felt uncertain, I started questioning things I had never thought to question before.
I found myself going down rabbit holes about spirituality, ancient civilizations, and eventually astrology, where a reading told me I would soon begin, “building an empire.” That was laughable to me because at that point I wasn’t trying to build anything. I was actually craving the exact opposite: stability.
In this episode, I talk about reconnecting with childhood friends in Tennessee and rediscovering the importance of deep female friendship and community, finishing my six-month functional medicine journey, and how finally knowing what it felt like to feel good completely changed my relationship with food, alcohol, and the social pressure surrounding both.
As my internal world was changing, I decided my external world didn’t need to change too. I found an apartment, committed to another year in Michigan, and had my two jobs for stability…
Or so I thought.
Because that astrology prediction I laughed at was about to start making a lot more sense soon.
After ending my long-term relationship, I thought I was changing one part of my life. Instead, nearly every relationship and structure around me began changing at once.
In this episode, I talk about feeling my sibling relationship slipping away, my parents announcing their divorce, and becoming an aunt as my family took on an entirely new shape. I share what it was like to end a relationship while still living together, continue taking previously planned trips, and remain committed to leaving even when the person I remembered from the beginning briefly returned.
I also tell the story of unexpectedly crossing paths with the most attractive man I had ever seen, reconnecting with the friends who knew me before I lost myself, questioning whether Michigan was still home, and experiencing the beginning of a spiritual awakening as my health and mental clarity improved.
This is an episode about messy endings, divine timing, family restructuring, and the moment you realize that choosing yourself is not one decision, it is a series of choices you must keep making.
Sometimes everything changes at once because the life you were living can no longer hold the person you are becoming.
Before I tell you how I rebuilt my life, I need to tell you how I lost myself.
In this episode, I go back to the woman I was before everything changed: fiercely independent, career-driven, agnostic, and convinced that marriage and children were not part of the life I wanted. Then I share how a long-distance relationship filled with intensity, grand gestures, inconsistencies, and unmet promises slowly disconnected me from that version of myself.
I talk about anxious attachment, overgiving, isolation, declining health, and what happens when you keep working harder to earn back the love you received at the beginning. I also share how becoming a functional medicine patient, struggling to find genuine community at the hospital, and witnessing my own healing helped me see my life more clearly.
By my twenty-eighth birthday, I realized I did not need one small change. I needed to restructure everything: my relationship, my home, my career in medicine, and the future I thought I was building.
This is the story of how I stopped asking, “What more can I do to make this work?” and started asking, “What would my life look like if I stopped abandoning myself to preserve it?”
On September 9, 2025, I found an empty journal in my house and wrote my first journal entry ever.
I listed nine things I was ready to release, including relationships and jobs that no longer served me, and described the woman and life I wanted to call in.
One year later, nearly every area I wrote about had transformed... but not in the way I expected.
In the first episode of The Mackenzie Cooney Show, I read that original entry and reflect on the year that followed: losing my relationship, my home, and two jobs; launching a business; traveling in search of healing; experiencing a spiritual awakening; and meeting someone I believed could be the love of my life, only to lose that relationship in unimaginable chaos.
This is the beginning of a season about manifestation, heartbreak, healing, functional medicine, spirituality, relationships, entrepreneurship, and rebuilding your life while you’re still grieving the one you left behind.
Sometimes manifestation doesn’t begin with receiving.
Sometimes it begins with everything falling away.
