  • Episode 140: Homestretcin' 26

Welcome to one of the last new music episodes of The Magic Organ for 2026. As regular listners know, our best of year wrap up usually entails 5-6 episodes so that happens in November and December, it's the final listen and distillation of a year's listening. That is not to say that this episode is without a boatload of bangers and deep commentary, don't sleep on this bad boy. Special shout out to Pokey LaFarge's new record, it's crackin'. I have to give more time to the More Eaze record which kicks this episode off.

We do our classic thing every episode -- mixing the genres, mixing up the energies, mixing up the flavors. Once again I throw down the gauntlet and challenge anybody to match my songpicking skills, pick 6 you bitches and roll up! Let's be friends or a kind of friends.

    Excerpts from this episode:

    More Eaze: Biters

    Pokey LaFarge: The Thing

    Adrian Younge: Every Body

    Genesis Owusu: HELLSTAR

    Gelbart: Katsu Funeral Heartbreak

    Carmen Villain: Blue

Feel free, (it's free!) to follow me on the on the voluntary social media/culture programming toilet machine called Instagram where I conversate and show my love for music as themagic_organ. I got it friggin' goin' on over there, the very definition of epic; denouncing spectacle based American culture and serving up fresh bangers as I unearth them. Now that's a coupla sentences. Exciting doesn't even begin to cover it. If you would like to help the magic organ lay at my feet 5 shits on the itunes, 5 starry shits on the itunes I dare not dream!!! Cough it up people. Or you can email me to say how I changed your life with all this great music. Music can be social, you can have opinions, the roar of the masses are not just farts as the Minutemen used to say.

I'm always open to listener suggested playlists if you feel you can hang with the host. I'll even co host the show with you and I will be super nice. I might even serve biscuits. C'mon take the bait! LFG.

You can find these artists on bandcamp and streaming outlets. You can support them by listening and telling your friends. • Episode 139: 6 Dimensions of Funk

Welcome to Episode 139 of The Magic Organ, the 6 dimensions of funk. I've been wanting to collect a small sample of some of my favorite funk tracks whether they lie directly inside the definition of funk or not. African music, techno music, a lot of Latin music, it's all an extension of funk music, well techno is and African and Latin music are the godfathers of funk music. No need to get to deeply into this topic, it's all about the listening.

Secondly, I forgot to bring a microphone back home with me and I ended up doing the back half of this episode with a text to speech converter. As I say in the episode it's not that different from some rando with a microphone using a pitchshifter to do a Family Dollar impersonation of a Quiet Storm DJ from back in the day.

The funk is all around, enjoy.

    Excerpts from this episode:

    Owiny Sigoma Band: Norbat Okelo

Nino Moschella: Are You for Real

Eric B. and Rakim: I Ain't No Joke

    Karol Conka: Vola

    Machete: Fatima

    Jeri-Jeri: Xale Rhythm

  • Episode 138: If you're not listening to world music....

Hey, hey just a quick welcome to Episode 138 of The Magic Organ. This episode's title is inspired by the first two tracks here, a funky stew out of Uganda from Serokolo 7 and a large ensemble out of Colombia called Nuevos Rios. Both these records slap, they're full of creativity and energy and all the good shit. Americans listen to barely any world music, world music has a very low profile in America cuz it's not made by white people, but the music is so so good (not all of it, but a lot). And The Magic Organ is here for you when it comes to world music.

Rounding out the episode we have some Wu Tang-ish hip hop from Starker, some electro clash punk from a long running outfit ADULT., a weird ass blend of electronic and heavy metal feels from Fire-Toolz. And as I always have trouble finding rock music, or rock like music for those who traffic in it, we wrap up the episode with a world weary faded rocker from Beth Orton.

    Excerpts from this episode:

    Serokolo 7: Chunku Manabeng

Nuevos Rios: La Memoria de Justino

    Starker: Questlove

    ADULT.: Freaks

Fire-Toolz A Demon & Its Spinal Cord Flapping in The Wind

    Beth Orton: Cigarette Curls

  • Episode 137: Not Standard But Stylish

There's really not a ton of new music listening left for the year 2026. There will be a big spurt of back to school new music in September and October and then November kicks off the extended best of year lists starting as early as the first week of November. The Magic Organ usually rocks 5-6 best of year episodes, don't sleep on that, we have the best best of year list of all.

There are two (most likely) best of year list records featured in this episode, the opening track from Olof Dreijer and the second track from a funk record by Liv.e and a drummer from Detroit, Kariem Riggins performing under the name GENA. The other four tracks are bangers and while the records aren't best of year for me you should check for yourself because we're all different and we like different things.

    Excerpts from this episode:

    Olof Dreijer: Acuyuye

GENA: Left the Club Like "Really N***a!"

    Elanor Moss: Again, My Love

    IZCO: Turn Me On

    730turk: fish grease

    Infant: Broth

  • Episode 136: It Goes All Ways

In this time when the American Gestapo is rounding up anybody in order to make their deportation quotas, The Magic Organ pumps out the jams by those these fascist white people call the undersirables. I love me some undesirable. A Brazilian big band, hip hop (oh lord the shithead white people hate the hip hop) and dancefloor music which has heavy non white history and continues that way.

I'm no Rodney King kinda fella (google him), these fascists gotta go they suck ass, they're boring they're violent they're destroying our shared humanity.

    Excerpts from this episode:

    Gaia Wilmer Large Ensemble: Folia

Open Mike Eagle and Kenny Segal: Unfinished Concrete Initials

    Flame Folklore: Clam

    Overmono: Slowmotion

    Matuk & FEDRA: Ricotta

    Non Moschella: Thank you, Mama

  • Episode 135: Peep It If You Feel It!

That is my advice to you, peep it if you feel it. The Magic Organ is much like the tv sitcom Seinfeld, except we are vehemently opposed to the genocide in Gaza. Every episode is different tunes but the theme is the same - we got bangers from all over, the middle part of this episode goes from Italy to Mali to Venezuela to Cuba, worldwide I tell ya. And we are uninterested in issues of class and race, we want all classes and races up in here, the issue is quality something that can be argued over forever. My quality may not be your quality and vice versa. So enjoy this quality and if you feel it peep it.

    Excerpts from this episode:

Sir Richard Bishop: Sweet Lips Spiritual

Portraits of Tracy: Caught in a Jam

Nu Genea & Fabiana Martone: Puleza

    Fatoumata Diawara: Mogo

    Arca: XXXXX

  • Episode 134: What are We Doing? Where are We Going?

We always put the most likely year end best of list bangers up front, we know folks be busy and you gotta hit 'em with your best shot right out of the gate as Pat Benatar used to say. We pop off with some abstract dancefloor techno out of the UK from Batu & Donato Dozzy -- great arrangements, interesting sounds and a big shout out to the hand drumming or the programmed hand drumming. The second tune is from the collaboration between the Mexican Institute of Sound & Meridian Brothers (check out the Meridian Brothers on their own; their records have made my best of year list previously), it's a great summer record of cumbia+, let's call it cumbia plus, it's a really great record.

After that I fill in with ear catching tracks from records that I don't think will make my year end list due to my finicky-ness, but others may like them bunches as we're all different in our tastes and our behaviors. We're all liking different things, going different places, enjoy the metal and horns up ya shittaz.

    Excerpts from this episode:

    Batu & Donato Dozzy: Drift

Mexican Institute of Sound & Meridian Brothers: Perdi mis ojos

No Truth: You Crawl, We Conquer

    ideasforconversations: honest

    Sofie Birch: Juaduddanya

Fossilization: Scalded by his Sacred Halo

  • Episode 133: Over the Top and Through the Grinder

Underneath the shiny, suffocating blanket of pop music/mainstream culture all manner of shit is going on, that's the flavor of this episode. Only a long time from now people will have some idea of what is happening, but from where this ghetto music philosopher sits we are witnessing the blenderization of all genres -- chunks of this go with this, why? Because someone put them together to create an effect; whether that's to create an over the top spectacle or to break something pretty into tiny digital pieces. All this with many many grooves coming from all over, I enjoy the variety and appreciate all the different ways music manifests. It's hard to get folks to open their minds but we keep trying. As the title of the Horse Lords excerpt is titled: Playing and Reality.

    Excerpts from this episode:

Brutalismus 3000: No Friends in the Company

    Tran Uy Duc: Deserver

    Ibrahim Alfa Jnr: Marine

    MPTL Microplastics: Plastic Princess

    K Wata: Radio Embrace

  • Episode 132: Two Fitty and Sinking

Happy birthday 'Merka, you sad ass corrupt garbage can of a country turned into a shithole by the current Orange Turdmaster. As I scan the excerpts from this episode, almost all of this music is made by people targeted to be deported or put in jail, black folks and immigrants or potential immigrants. So yes, I believe that a lot of cultures mixing together is a good thing for all those cultures, keeps 'em fresh and aware, and it is essential to having music evolve and expand. There's a reason why American music has been head and shoulders above other countries why are you dumbasses trying to make everything boring and white???

    Excerpts from this episode:

    Yaadcore: Rasta Time

    Wiki: Right Away

Converge: It's not Up to Us

    Nduduzo Makhathini: Imvunge KaNtu

Los Mirlos & LA LOM: Llanto en la Selva

  • Episode 131: Reflecting Pool

Random episote title, but not random song picks! I was going to go with Early Summer bangers as a title and then meh, that's boring, so we switch it up. A combination of straight up party jams at slot 1 and slot 3 with more abstract and quality electronic business at slots 2 and 5. All slots filled with creativity.

Ya know music is both just music and it's much more than music, it's a non spoken language humans use to communicate with each other. And it's our culture, and while most Americans love them some shiny corporate pop culture we don't roll like that at The Magic Organ.

Just great music is more than enough to make us all feel better.

    Reflecting Pool.

    Excerpts from this episode:

Mexican Institute of Sound & Meridian Brothers: El Campeon

    Ital Tek: A Hidden Path

    Joey Quinones: Soul Steady Situation

    SALEM: Vampyre

    SHHE: Allasso
