Having watched the more famous 1941 version of The Maltese Falcon, we were curious to turn the clock back to 1931 when Hollywood took it's first shot at a film adaptation of the novel. At that time Hollywood was in the far less puritanical "pre-code" era where slightly more risque material was accepted. We find a more smug, playboy version of Sam Spade among other surprises.
