On a moonless August night on old Route 66, Luna's sedan overheats outside Ludlow, California—a ghost town of a gas station and a boarded-up café. While waiting for the engine to cool, she meets an old man at a rusted picnic table. He tells her about the night in 1977 when he was a Greyhound driver and picked up a passenger at a bus stop that hadn't existed in fifteen years. The woman wore a blue dress and carried no luggage. She gave him an address that led to a foundation hole. He's been coming back to Ludlow ever since, waiting for her to board again. Luna listens as the desert cools and the stars come out. She never sees another car pass. By morning, the old man is gone, and the picnic table is gone, and the gas station attendant says no one has lived in Ludlow for decades.
