October 2023. A cold stretch of Interstate 70 in western Kansas, where the rest stops are spaced too far apart and the towns are drying up. Luna stops at Rest Stop 9 to check her map and meets a man in a cheap highway-vestorange who is sweeping the asphalt methodically at 2 a.m. He tells her he's been hired to maintain a stretch of road that doesn't officially exist on any county record, and that he's been seeing things moving just beyond the high beams. He asks her to turn off her car engine so he can show her what he's been sweeping toward. This is a story about the kindness of strangers, the quiet spaces the highway misses, and the light that never comes from headlights.
