On January 7, 1948, reports of a mysterious object in the sky over Kentucky led military pilots to investigate. Captain Thomas Mantell climbed after the object in his P-51 Mustang, but contact with him was lost. His aircraft later crashed, killing him.

The incident became one of the earliest major UFO cases of the postwar era. Early explanations were uncertain, helping extraordinary theories spread. Later investigations suggested that Mantell may have been pursuing a high altitude Skyhook balloon before losing consciousness from oxygen deprivation.

Did Thomas Mantell die chasing something genuinely unidentified, or did an experimental balloon, extreme altitude, and incomplete information create one of America's first great UFO mysteries?
