Without a doubt the church at Jerusalem, in the first few chapters of Acts, appears as a church that is on fire for God, for the Lord Jesus Christ. They were active and doing the things the Lord had commanded. And, they were doing them in spite of opposition and persecution from those that many looked upon as the “religious authority” of the day. Because of their obedience and faithfulness, the Lord was adding “to the church daily such as should be saved.” If there was ever a time when the Lord’s churches needed to be on fire for Him, it is TODAY! Sinfulness is running at epidemic proportions in our nation and in the world. We have just recently seen how the lost of the world ridicule God and mock at sin. I believe it is a shame that to many in the world Catholicism is the representative image of Christianity. And many, if not most, of the Lord’s true churches today, instead of being a mighty army advancing for the cause of Christ find themselves either “dug in” just trying to hold their ground, or are in retreat. Let me ask, what words would you use to describe this church? Are we a church on fire for the Lord? Does the community around us take notice of us? Do we have a reputation of a mighty advancing army, or are those around us able to completely ignore us? Are we like those Vance Havner talked about who are trying to get the lost to ask (vs. 37), “What shall we do?” before we ever, by our lives, cause them to ask (vs. 12), “What meaneth this?” Or, have we, as so many, found our comfort zone where we are satisfied with ourselves? In this second chapter of Acts we see in the church at Jerusalem the marks of a church that is on fire fire for the Lord. We need to ask ourselves, “Do these marks describe us?” A church that is on fire for God has (demonstrates) . . .
