Southward, the woods close in. A low droning rises, heavy with hunger, and the air itself shudders with menace. By the end, smoke coils where no hand has set a flame, and shadows twist between the trees.

Ahead, on the horizon, a steeple leans against the dying sun—broken, waiting, patient as the grave.
