The Psychology of a Serial Killer: Harold Shipman

The Medical Expert in Court

Listen Later

In this latest episode we look at the role of the medical expert and what happens when they’re called to give evidence. From Dr Arthur Douthwaite of Guys Hospital and 49 Harley Street, who tried and failed to discredit Bodkin Adams to our very own Doctor Andrew Johns, Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist, The Maudsley Hospital, a medical expert who has presented evidence in over a 100 homicide cases over more than 30 years.

From getting through the security perimeter of Belmarsh, a category A prison to

interviewing and observing the prisoner closely and taking up to 30 sides of A4 notes while doing so, Andrew explains what impact his role might have and even how to keep working when a prisoner in Brixton jail on a homicide charge told Andrew that the birds on his windowsill were telling him to murder our good doctor.
