What does the bible mean when it says "the meek shall inherit the earth?"

Transcript:

Welcome to the defender's digest. Happy Monday defenders. I'm excited to be with you guys here. This is our first episode together of the defenders digest, and I am excited. Today I wanted to start off with something that's near and dear to my heart. That's very valuable, very important. And there seems to be a bit of mystery around it. If you look at Psalm 37, verse 11, it says, but the meek shall inherit the earth and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

So oftentimes when we talk to people in our culture today, in our world today, if we ask them what the word meek means, they tend to think that meek has something to do with weakness. They think that meek is timid, meek is shy. They don't understand the biblical context of the word meek. And this is something that I think is of vital importance to us as Christians that we clarify because meek, honestly, earnestly should be one of our biggest goals in life. Now, obviously our goal as Christians is to reflect and that's what we're doing here. So what does it mean to be meek? Well, it turns out that in the biblical context, if you've never heard this before, it turns out that in a biblical context, meek is not something to do with weakness. It's not something to do with timidness or shyness or letting people walk all over you. No, meek is actually a really profound idea to be meek is to have a sword, to know how to use it and to keep it sheath. So in order to be meek, you need to be powerful. You need to be strong. You need to have a weapon at your disposal. You need to be skillful. You need to be intelligent. You need to know how to wield that weapon. And you need to have an abundance of self control.

Because you need to know to keep it sheath. Does that mean that you do not ever draw the blade? Probably not. When you look at Christ and we see the life of Christ, we know that there were times when he flipped tables. We know there were times when he chose to tap into his spiritual powers to raise people from the dead. And we know there were times when he chose not to do these things. We know that there were times when he told, for example, John the Baptists disciples that, you know, tell John of what you see here today that the blind sea, that the lame walk And blessed as he, who does not stumble for my name's sake. That's a paraphrase. But what he's really saying to John in this moment is to his disciples, cuz the disciples came and said, are you the one we're looking for? Or should we seek another? What Jesus is really saying in that moment is John. It's obvious. I'm the Messiah. Look at what I do. And no, I'm not coming for you. There were times when Jesus stood back when he was on the cross, for example, no man took Christ's life. Christ gave it willing. So when he's on the cross, when, when he's being tortured, when he's being crucified, he let that happen. When the guards came to take him, one of the gospels tells us that Peter grabbed a sword and cut off a man's ear. Christ stopped him and said, Peter don't do that. And then he healed the ear.
