The Bible is a book about God's pursuit of man and what He has done through the offspring to reconcile creation back to Himself. 

In Abraham we see

1) God is a God of grace.

2) God works through promise and faith in the promise.

Religion is essentially a set of rules that we must do and receive reward for doing.  Christianity comes and tells us what has already been done and what we receive as reward for the doing of another, Jesus Christ.
