Publisher's Summary:
In the tradition of Arianna Franklin and C. J. Sansom comes Samuel Thomas' remarkable debut, The Midwife's Tale.
It is 1644, and Parliament's armies have risen against the King and laid siege to the city of York. Even as the city suffers at the rebels' hands, midwife Bridget Hodgson becomes embroiled in a different sort of rebellion. One of Bridget's friends, Esther Cooper, has been convicted of murdering her husband and sentenced to be burnt alive. Convinced that her friend is innocent, Bridget sets out to find the real killer.
Bridget joins forces with Martha Hawkins, a servant who's far more skilled with a knife than any respectable woman ought to be. To save Esther from the stake, they must dodge rebel artillery, confront a murderous figure from Martha's past, and capture a brutal killer who will stop at nothing to cover his tracks. The investigation takes Bridget and Martha from the homes of the city's most powerful families to the alleyways of its poorest neighborhoods. As they delve into the life of Esther's murdered husband, they discover that his ostentatious Puritanism hid a deeply sinister secret life, and that far too often tyranny and treason go hand in hand.

. Interesting change in the program from the rest of the series - not York, not a gentlewoman, not familiar, no friendly jail
It has been a few years after the last book. Country life has become boring. Then a letter comes saying that Will is in the Tower and needs his aunt's help. Bridget and Martha set off without Elizabeth and Hannah, much to the child's displeasure. On arriving in London, they find Will has been turned into a spy by Cromwell after falling in with a group of Levellers. Bridget is also drafted into the program because she is a midwife like the loudest woman in the group of discontents. The woman's husband is murdered and they investigate at the request of both the widow and the spymaster. Craziness ensues with more deaths and twisted loyalties. Interesting change in the program from the rest of the series - not York, not a gentlewoman, not familiar, no friendly jail folks.
I like this series.
I really have enjoyed this series. The time frame is very interesting as is the setting in the different areas of England. This book is set mostly in London which makes it some different from the first three books in the series. The characters are good. I especially enjoy reading about the clothes that they wear and the shopping experiences. The story line is excellent and I hope for more from Mr.Thomas.
Spying midwives and the Execution of Charles II
Well-researched historical set in the aftermath of the English civil wars of the 1640s. Unlike the first three novels in the series, this one takes place in London. Although there is little actual midwifery in the story, it is more than made up for with political intrigue. An entertaining addition to the series.
Midwife comes this close to being the murder victim.
Part of the Midwife series of murder mysteries, this one is set in London at the time of Oliver Cromwell. Part of what makes these books so enjoyable is the verisimilitude, learning history as you follow a well written mystery.
