Publisher's Summary:
The two protagonists in John A. Bercaw's new adventure, a warrant officer and a second lieutenant, don't comprehend the full extent of the peril awaiting them when their helicopter crashes into the jungle of Vietnam.
All the warrant officer had to do was fly a few newly assigned officers on a tour over their area of operations. It was an easy mission, and he didn't anticipate the enemy shooting down the helicopter and killing most of the passengers and crew. The only other survivor is the inexperienced second lieutenant. The warrant officer fears that his new companion will be useless in the struggle for survival ahead of them.
As the two soldiers confront the Vietcong and the many challenges of the harsh landscape, they gain the level of trust and respect for each other that only arises from extreme situations. They both realize that it will take nothing short of a miracle for them to make it out of the jungle alive.

When danger approaches, sing to it.
I had to remind myself numerous times throughout this book that it is a work of fiction - it is that realistic! While I've never been shot down in the jungles of Vietnam, I HAVE lived in Thailand and can vouch for the array of creatures and dangerous, even brutal, conditions that Mr. Bercaw describes. I almost feel as though I may have picked up a few survival tips while reading this book!
With wonderful, descriptive writing and concise language, this book is a true page-turner, and moves very quickly. As with Mr. Bercaw's first book, A Pink Mist, I found the writing fascinating and hope there is a number three in the works.
Short, Intense, Well-Written Action-Adventure
This was a quick -- because I couldn't put it down -- and intense read. The author obviously drew on his own experiences as a helicopter pilot, but just as obviously also did a fair amount of research on jungle survival. The book is well written. I did not notice any typos or other errors. Highly recommend this book not only to people interested in Vietnam War action-adventure stories but to anyone who likes a good adventure tale.

I think, most chopper crew member's fear was not being killed but being shot down and having to survive in the jungle and/or being captured. After reading John's book, I think the reader will understand why they felt that way. His story is about courage, determination, fellowship, loyalty, and how combat soldiers handle impossible circumstance. For me, this account brought out many emotions. Thankfulness, I wasn't shot down. Laughter, in spite of their circumstances, the men kept their humor. Pride, I belong to a group of men who did their job despite the circumstances. Tears, knowing the price many paid and many others are still paying for their service to our country.
