Remember when there was absolutely NOTHING to do?
Not “nothing good on Netflix.” Not “I've already watched everything on YouTube.”
I mean genuinely... nothing.
Your friends weren't home. Nothing was on TV. It was raining outside. You'd already played your Atari. Eventually, you were reduced to reading the back of the cereal box or just lying on your bed staring at the ceiling.
Gen X grew up in a world where boredom was unavoidable.
Today, we carry nearly unlimited entertainment in our pockets. Movies, music, games, books, news, social media and practically all of human knowledge are available within seconds.
And somehow, standing in line for 30 seconds without looking at our phones can feel unbearable.
So what happened?
In this episode, I'm looking back at what we actually did when there was “nothing to do”—and asking whether boredom may have given us something we didn't realize we were losing.
Creativity. Curiosity. Imagination. Reflection. Or occasionally just enough free time to dig a completely unnecessary hole in the backyard.
I don't think Gen X was better at being bored.
We just didn't have a choice.
Maybe the goal isn't to become bored again.
Maybe it's just to stop being afraid of it.
