  • Ep: 022 Caleb Rapoport of Nerd Halen

Guitarist, EVH artist and Nerd Halen founder Caleb Rapoport joins us for a conversation filled with personal stories, chance encounters and, of course, Van Halen.

Caleb takes us back to his teenage years and a chance encounter that would change the course of his life: spending several hours with Edward and Alex Van Halen during a taping of One Day at a Time. He shares what it was like meeting his guitar hero at such a young age, the impression Edward left on him, and how that experience helped set him on a lifelong musical path.

Caleb also tells the remarkable story of how Taylor Hawkins and Taylor’s legendary cover band Chevy Metal ultimately helped spark the idea that would become Nerd Halen. What began as a lifelong love for Van Halen and guitar eventually grew into one of the most unique VH tribute bands around.

It’s an episode about meeting your heroes, following your musical passion and how a few unexpected moments can change the direction of your life.

  • Ep: 019 The Hot for Teacher Focus, Back to School Edition

In the spirit of “Back to School” season, Tommy & Tor head back to the classroom for a deep dive into one of the great anomalies in rock music: Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher.”

From Alex Van Halen’s legendarily epic opening drum assault and Edward Van Halen’s blistering guitar work to David Lee Roth at his most outrageous, the guys break down a song that somehow became a Van Halen classic despite sounding like almost nothing else heard on rock radio before or since.

    And then there’s the video.

From Waldo and the classroom cast to the band members’ younger alter egos, the infamous 1932 Ford “school bus,” and the unforgettable choreography, Tommy & Tor dig into the stories, trivia, and details behind one of the defining music videos of the MTV era.

More than four decades later, “Hot for Teacher” remains completely over the top, instantly recognizable, and nearly impossible to imagine coming from any other band.

  • Ep: 018 A VH Round Table with Don Jamieson & Keith Roth

Plenty of legendary bands have changed lead singers. Some survived, some became even bigger, and others were never quite the same. But decades later, few of those changes continue to generate headlines, arguments and passionate reactions the way Van Halen’s still does.

For the first-ever Mighty VH Round Table, Tommy and Tor are joined by comedian Don Jamieson and SiriusXM’s Keith Roth to ask a different kind of question about the great David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar debate: Why are we still even talking about it?

Forty years after Hagar joined Van Halen, what is it about this particular change that continues to divide fans and make news? Why has Roth vs. Hagar remained part of the conversation when singer changes in so many other major bands have long since become simply part of their history?

Don, Keith, Tommy and Tor dig into what made Van Halen’s situation different, from the enormous personalities and success of both eras to everything that happened before, during and after the change.

This isn’t about deciding who was better. It’s about why, 40 years later, people still feel the need to pick a side.

Welcome to the VH Round Table.

  • Ep: 017 The What If Episode

What if Sammy Hagar turned down the offer to join Van Halen? What if Van Halen fully reunited in 1996? What if the band never recorded “Jump?”

In this episode of The Mighty VH Podcast, Tommy and Tor head into the alternate universe of Van Halen history and ask some of the biggest “What If?” questions from throughout the band’s legendary career.

From lineup changes and missed opportunities to songs, albums and decisions that could have completely altered the course of the band, they explore how one different choice or one different moment might have rewritten Van Halen history. Some scenarios are rooted in things that almost happened, while others are pure speculation, leading to plenty of debate over where each alternate path might have taken the band.

It’s Van Halen history as it happened and as it very easily might not have.
