  • Think NEO To Be Better ft. Ryan Grant

Ryan Grant was running a profitable mortgage company when Better came calling. His first answer was no.

What changed his mind? Technology that challenged his assumptions about the cost of lending, combined with something he believed technology alone could not provide: a local mortgage advisor who knows the customer and stays involved after closing.

In this episode of The MikedUp Show, Michael Kelleher and Michael Zau sit down with Ryan Grant of NEO Home Loans to explore a difficult leadership question: How do you convince successful people to change a business that is already working?

Ryan’s path started far from that question. He planned to become a civil rights attorney, entered mortgages in 2005, and spent his early years working refinance calls. The turning point came when he started building relationships with real estate agents and focusing on purchase loans. Showing up at open houses, meeting people, and earning their trust helped him grow from $11 million in production in his first year of that approach to $100 million in his third.

But producing more loans was not the whole ambition. When Ryan and his partners started NEO in 2020, they wanted borrowers to expect more from a mortgage company. Closing the loan was the beginning. Helping someone become a successful homeowner meant continuing to offer education, planning, and support long afterward.

The partnership with Better introduced a new way to deliver on that promise. Better brought technology and access to potential buyers. NEO brought local advisors and established relationships. Putting those strengths together also meant asking experienced professionals to learn unfamiliar systems while continuing to serve their clients.

Ryan is candid about that challenge. A system built for customers applying directly online does not automatically fit the way a local advisor works. Training, patience, and changes to daily routines were part of the transition.

The conversation also looks at who comes next. Through The NEO Way, new team members can learn the business as production partners, observe experienced advisors, and take on more responsibility as their skills develop. Ryan wants a career path that gives people support rather than expecting them to figure everything out alone.

For Ryan, the measure of success extends beyond rankings and closing volume. It includes whether advisors can build a sustainable business and whether clients are better informed and better supported years after getting their keys.

Listen for a founder’s perspective on changing course before you have to, bringing your team through that change, and making a promise to borrowers that goes beyond closing day.

  • Be In All The Lanes with Ashley Puckett

    Capital markets touches everything.

    Pricing.
    Risk.
    Investor delivery.
    Loan officer confidence.
    Operations.
    Execution.
The final result the borrower feels.

In this episode of The MikedUp Show, Michael Kelleher and Michael Zau sit down with Ashley Puckett, AVP of Capital Markets at Novus Home Mortgage, for a conversation about what it really means to understand the mortgage business from more than one seat.

Ashley’s career has been built through curiosity, consistency, and a willingness to learn the parts of the business most people never see. She started in the mortgage industry in 2011 as a loan processor, moved into post closing, and eventually found her lane in secondary marketing and capital markets. She has since earned both her AMP and CMB designations, reflecting a serious commitment to education, growth, and mastery in the industry. Newslink

    That path matters.

Because capital markets is not isolated from the rest of the company. It connects directly to how loans are priced, how files are delivered, how risk is managed, how investors are served, and how loan officers compete in the field. Ashley’s role gives her a view across the entire mortgage machine.

That is the center of this episode.

Be in All the Lanes is about refusing to stay boxed into one narrow version of mortgage.

It is about understanding how the pieces connect.

It is about learning the work behind the work.

It is about being the person others can call when the file is complicated, the delivery is tight, or the answer is not obvious.

Ashley has also been recognized for her leadership and commitment to helping others grow. Her Women in Housing Leadership Award nomination highlighted how she trains, mentors, and supports others with patience and clarity, especially in capital markets roles that can feel intimidating to people early in their careers.

The episode also looks at why mentorship matters in mortgage. Ashley’s story is not only about personal achievement. It is about the people who taught her, the designations she pursued, the network she built, and the responsibility she now feels to bring others along.

At Novus Home Mortgage, that perspective fits into a company focused on creating a simpler, smoother, and more transparent mortgage experience with a mix of personal guidance and modern technology. Novus describes its approach as combining personalized expert guidance with mortgage technology to help borrowers move forward with confidence. Novus Home Mortgage

This conversation is for anyone in mortgage who wants to grow beyond their current role.

For loan officers, it is a reminder that pricing and execution matter.

For operations teams, it is a reminder that every handoff matters.

For capital markets professionals, it is a reminder that your work shapes the business more than people may realize.

And for rising leaders, it is a reminder that being in all the lanes does not mean doing everything at once.

It means understanding enough to lead with confidence.

  • Expand Your Radius with Sarah Valentini

Some companies grow by chasing volume.

Others grow by building something people want to belong to.

In this episode of The MikedUp Show, Michael Kelleher and Michael Zau sit down with Sarah Valentini, Co-Founder and CEO of radius financial group, for a conversation about leadership, culture, community, and what it takes to build an independent mortgage bank that lasts.

Sarah started radius financial group in 1999 and has spent more than two decades building a company known not only for production, but for the way it operates. The company’s guiding belief, “better has no finish line,” says a lot about how Sarah leads. Growth is not treated as a destination. It is treated as a standard.

That idea sits at the center of this episode.

Expand Your Radius is about more than growing a company footprint.

It is about expanding what leadership means.

Expanding how mortgage companies show up for their teams.

Expanding how lenders serve their communities.

Expanding what a mortgage brand can stand for beyond rates, units, and closings.

Sarah’s journey as a founder and CEO is rooted in building with intention. Since launching radius, she has helped lead an independent mortgage bank through changing markets, different lending cycles, and shifting borrower expectations. That kind of longevity requires more than strategy. It requires culture, consistency, and a clear sense of who you are as a company.

This conversation explores how Sarah built a business with culture at the center, why leadership has to be lived daily, and how companies can keep improving without losing the values that made them successful in the first place.

Sarah was also recognized as an EY Entrepreneur of the Year New England finalist, a reflection of the entrepreneurial discipline and leadership behind the company she helped build. But her impact extends beyond mortgage banking.

Her work with South Shore Habitat for Humanity, including her recognition with the Bravo Award for her role as Outstanding Event Chair at the High Heels and Hard Hats Gala, reflects a deeper commitment to community. As National Women Build Chairwoman, Sarah helped support work focused on building homes and strengthening local communities one project at a time.

That connection between mortgage, housing, and community is one of the most important themes in this episode.

Mortgage is not just a transaction.

It is tied to where families live, how communities grow, and how leaders choose to use their platform.

Sarah’s story is a reminder that the best mortgage companies are not built only around products. They are built around people, purpose, and the constant pursuit of getting better.

This episode is for mortgage founders, executives, loan officers, operations leaders, and anyone thinking about how to build something that can grow without losing its soul.

Because better has no finish line.

  • From Recruiting To Retention ft. Ron Mueller

What if the best recruiting strategy was not a signing bonus?

    What if it was ownership?

In this episode of The MikedUp Show, Michael Kelleher and Michael Zau sit down with Ron Mueller of USA Mortgage for a conversation about employee ownership, long term retention, loan officer development, and what it means to build a mortgage company where people have a real stake in the outcome.

Ron has spent 25 years in mortgage. He has been a loan officer, a top producer, a branch builder, a regional leader, and now one of the key people helping shape USA Mortgage into a national, employee owned lender.

His story is not about jumping from company to company chasing the next comp plan.

It is about building inside one organization, growing with the company, and helping others do the same.

USA Mortgage is 100 percent employee owned through an ESOP. That means loan officers, processors, support staff, and team members across the company all participate in ownership. No outside investors. No private equity. The work people do every day can compound into something bigger than a paycheck.

That idea sits at the center of this episode.

The mortgage industry has spent years treating recruiting like a transaction. Bigger signing bonus. Better bps. New platform. New pitch. But Ron makes the case that retention is built differently. It comes from culture, leadership, opportunity, training, ownership, and a company that helps people see a future.

USA Mortgage helped 8,000 families buy homes last year. Its executive team averages more than 20 years of tenure. The company has built a training academy to develop the next generation of loan officers instead of relying only on recruiting experienced producers from other companies.

That is the difference between hiring people and building people.

Ron also talks about the balance between technology and human support. He believes the mortgage process needs to keep evolving and become more digital, but he also understands that mortgages are still personal, complicated, and emotional. Not every borrower has a clean file. Not every document is easy. Not every question can be solved with automation.

Technology can create speed and options.

    People still create trust.

The conversation also explores what it means to be mid size on purpose. USA Mortgage is large enough to compete on products, pricing, technology, and national reach, but still close enough to its people that leaders remain accessible. For Ron, that matters. A loan officer should not feel like a number. A team member should not feel disconnected from leadership.

This episode is about moving from recruiting to retention.

From chasing talent to developing it.

From renting production to building ownership.

From short term growth to long term alignment.

For loan officers, branch managers, mortgage executives, and anyone thinking about where they want to build the next chapter of their career, this conversation offers a different way to look at value.

Because in a market where everyone is measured by units and volume, Ron believes the real business is still relationships.

  • Cultivate Leadership with Credit Unions ft. Malik Wilkes

Credit unions grow differently because the mission is different.

It is not just about getting attention.
    It is about earning trust.
It is about serving members well.
It is about using data, marketing, and technology to create better conversations before the loan ever starts.

In this episode of The MikedUp Show, Michael Kelleher and Michael Zau sit down with Malik Wilkes, CMB, Assistant Vice President of Product Marketing Mortgages at Space Coast Credit Union, for a conversation about leadership, member engagement, mortgage marketing, and how credit unions can build growth without losing their purpose.

Malik brings more than a decade of mortgage industry experience, a Certified Mortgage Banker designation, and a rare mix of product knowledge, compliance awareness, marketing strategy, and people development. His background gives him the ability to connect the practical realities of mortgage lending with the modern tools lenders need to reach members more effectively.

At Space Coast Credit Union, Malik stepped into a mortgage marketing function that had room to grow and helped turn it into a stronger, more modern engine for member engagement. Since joining SCCU in 2025, he has built a multi channel marketing strategy across paid media, automation, AI powered tools, content marketing, member intelligence, and retention campaigns.

The results speak to the work.

He rebuilt the credit union’s paid search and digital advertising strategy across Google Search, Meta, YouTube, and Performance Max, reaching a blended cost per click of $3.23 across channels. He also introduced mortgage focused social media campaigns, SEO driven content, and automated programs designed to help loan officers stay connected to past members and future opportunities.

One of the biggest themes in this conversation is the power of knowing your members.

Malik helped implement a homeowner financial intelligence platform that monitors SCCU’s 24,000 member database for refinance and home equity opportunities. That work has helped create stronger engagement and better timing, including a Home Digest email sequence that reached a 71 percent open rate.

    That is not just marketing.

    That is connection.

The episode also gets into how Malik developed an AI powered loan cost analysis tool that reached full adoption across the loan officer team. The goal was not to chase technology for the sake of technology. It was to help loan officers communicate more clearly, move faster, and serve members with better information.

This is where leadership shows up.

    Not just in a title.

    Not just in a department.

But in the ability to bring people, systems, data, and purpose together so the entire team can perform better.

Malik’s leadership approach is also shaped by his background in communication and people development. As a Florida International University graduate with a degree in English, and as a member of the FIU Alumni Association Board of Directors, he brings a strong belief in clear communication, relationship building, and helping people reach their goals.

This episode is for credit union leaders, mortgage marketers, loan officers, executives, operations teams, and anyone thinking about how member first lending can grow in today’s market.

Because credit union growth is not just about more leads.

    It is about better relationships.

    It is about better timing.

    It is about better service.

And it is about cultivating leaders who understand that members are not transactions. They are the reason the work matters.

  • Connections and Growth in Credit Unions ft. Christopher Sailus

Growth inside a credit union looks different.

It is not just about volume.

    It is about members.
    It is about trust.
    It is about service.
It is about building a mortgage department that can grow without losing the mission that made credit unions matter in the first place.

In this episode of The MikedUp Show, Michael Kelleher and Michael Zau sit down with Christopher Sailus, Director of Mortgage Lending at Oregon State Credit Union, for a conversation about change management, member experience, operational discipline, and how credit unions can build stronger mortgage platforms for the future.

Christopher brings more than 20 years of leadership across mortgage production, fulfillment, credit risk, secondary markets, product development, and operational design. His career has included leadership roles at Oregon State Credit Union, WaFd Bank, Alaska USA Mortgage Co., and other regulated financial institutions.

At Oregon State Credit Union, Christopher joined a mortgage department already in motion and helped lead a major transformation. The story is not just about improving numbers, although the numbers are clear. Production grew from $102 million to $161 million. Year over year production increased 46 percent. Cycle times dropped 30 percent.

The deeper story is how that happened.

Christopher led work across credit risk governance, product development, process redesign, and team development while keeping an 18 person team aligned through fast change. That kind of work requires more than strategy. It requires communication, consistency, and the ability to bring people with you.

That is the center of this episode.

How do you grow a mortgage business inside a credit union without breaking the team?

How do you improve speed without sacrificing service?

How do you use technology and data without losing the human connection members expect?

How do you build products that help members reach real financial goals?

Christopher also shares perspective from managing $2 billion in annual mortgage production at WaFd Bank, launching LOS and POS platforms for more than 800 users across 8 states, building wholesale divisions, opening new branches, and supporting special purpose credit programs for low to moderate income borrowers.

This episode also touches on AI in mortgage, but from a practical leadership lens. Christopher is making a deliberate investment in AI strategy through Johns Hopkins University’s AI Business Strategy certificate program, building on years of applied AI work around workflow design, loan technology evaluation, training content, and analytics.

For credit unions, the opportunity is clear.

Mortgage growth cannot only be about competing with banks, IMBs, and brokers. It has to be about using the credit union advantage correctly. Local trust. Member relationships. Clear communication. Better products. Stronger execution. A team that understands why the work matters.

This conversation is for credit union leaders, mortgage executives, operations teams, loan officers, compliance professionals, and anyone thinking about how member focused lending can grow in a difficult market.

Because the future of credit union mortgage is not just about getting bigger.

It is about getting better while staying connected to the people you serve.

  • Risk To Reinvention ft. Roy George

Risk is usually treated like something mortgage companies need to avoid.

    Roy George sees it differently.

In this episode of The MikedUp Show, Michael Kelleher and Michael Zau sit down with Roy George, President of MOR Lending, for a conversation about how risk, compliance, operations, and technology can become the foundation for reinvention.

Roy brings a rare combination to the mortgage industry. He has led at the executive level across fintech, compliance, and operations, giving him a view of the business that is both practical and forward looking. He understands the pressure of regulation, the importance of execution, and the need for mortgage companies to evolve without losing control of the customer experience.

That is the heart of this episode.

Mortgage leaders often talk about innovation, but real innovation has to survive inside the rules of the business. It has to work for operations. It has to make sense for compliance. It has to improve the borrower experience. It has to help teams move faster without creating new problems behind the scenes.

Roy’s background makes this conversation different because he does not separate risk from growth.

    He connects them.

The mortgage companies that win the next cycle will not be the ones ignoring risk. They will be the ones that understand it well enough to build smarter systems around it.

Roy shares how his operations and compliance experience shaped the way he thinks about leadership, technology, and customer experience. He also talks about why digitizing the mortgage process cannot simply mean adding more tools. It has to mean making the experience easier, clearer, and more useful for the people actually using it.

This episode also gets into leadership.

Roy is known for an approachable and transparent leadership style, and that shows in the way he thinks about change. Reinvention does not happen because a leader announces a new direction. It happens when teams understand the why, trust the process, and believe the changes will actually make the work better.

The conversation covers what it takes to lead through uncertainty, how mortgage companies can rethink their operations, and why compliance should not always be seen as the enemy of progress. Done correctly, compliance can create discipline. Operations can create consistency. Technology can create leverage. Leadership connects all of it.

Roy has been recognized as a thought leader in mortgage and fintech, including being featured in Disruptive Fintech: The Coming Wave of Innovation in Financial Services with Thought Leadership Provided by CEOs by James Deitch. His perspective is shaped by years of building, leading, fixing, and improving mortgage organizations from the inside.

This episode is for mortgage executives, operations leaders, compliance professionals, fintech builders, loan officers, and anyone trying to understand what responsible reinvention looks like in today’s lending market.

Because the future of mortgage will not be built by avoiding risk.

It will be built by understanding it, managing it, and using it as a starting point for something better.

  • From Evidence To Influence ft. Drew Gillett

    Attention is easy to chase.

    Trust is harder to earn.

In this episode of The MikedUp Show, Michael Kelleher and Michael Zau sit down with Drew Gillett, Vice President of Marketing at Guild Mortgage, for a conversation about what mortgage marketing actually needs to become.

Drew leads marketing at one of the largest retail mortgage lenders in the country, supporting field marketing, marketing training, retail social media, web and digital, content, design, lead management, sales engagement, and special marketing initiatives. His work touches thousands of employees and millions of consumers, but the heart of his approach is simple: help loan officers show up as trusted experts before the first conversation ever happens.

That is the core of this episode.

The modern loan officer cannot afford to be invisible.

In today’s market, borrowers and referral partners are already forming opinions before they ever pick up the phone. They are searching. Watching. Reading. Comparing. Looking for signs that someone knows what they are doing.

Drew explains why personal brand is no longer optional for mortgage professionals. It is not about becoming internet famous. It is about becoming recognizable, reliable, and trusted in the markets you serve.

This episode gets into the difference between promotion and proof.

Promotion tells people you are good.

    Proof shows them.

That distinction matters. Drew makes the case that the best mortgage content is not built around clever hooks or empty posts. It is built around evidence. Real advice. Clear explanations. Market knowledge. Consistent presence. The kind of content that makes someone say, “This person understands the problem I am trying to solve.”

Drew also shares the thinking behind his book, From Post to Close, a practical guide for mortgage professionals who know they need to be visible but do not know what to say, how to start, or how to turn content into real business. His view is clear: your story is your edge, but only if it helps people trust you.

The conversation also touches on AI in marketing, but from a practical lens.

Drew is not interested in hype. He is interested in whether AI helps teams move faster, test better ideas, remove busy work, and give loan officers more time to do the human parts of the job well. Technology should not replace relationships. It should strengthen them.

That theme runs through the entire episode.

    Marketing does not replace trust.

    Content does not replace service.

    AI does not replace judgment.

The best mortgage marketing supports the relationship before, during, and after the transaction.

Drew also talks about leadership, standards, ownership, and what it takes to run a marketing team that serves both the company and the field. His approach is calm, clear, and focused on execution. Know what good looks like. Own your part. Deliver without drama.

This episode is for loan officers, marketing leaders, branch managers, mortgage executives, and anyone trying to build a brand that earns business the right way.

Because in this market, being known is not enough.

    You need to be trusted.

  • Originator Operating System ft. Max Leaman

What would a mortgage company look like if it was built around the way top loan officers actually work?

In this episode of The MikedUp Show, Michael Kelleher and Michael Zau sit down with Max Leaman, CEO of LoanPeople, for a conversation about what it takes to build a platform that helps originators perform at a higher level without losing the parts of the business that matter most.

Max brings the rare perspective of someone who has lived the loan officer role at an elite level. Over a 20 plus year originator career, he funded more than $4 billion in loan volume, averaging over $300 million per year during the last decade. Scotsman Guide ranked him as the number one Texas originator by volume.

That experience shaped how he thinks about the mortgage business today.

LoanPeople was built by a loan officer, for loan officers. That matters because the best originators do not just need a company name behind them. They need an operating system that helps them win.

They need pricing that is competitive without weakening service.

They need communication that keeps Realtors and business partners confident.

They need operations that understand urgency.

They need tools that support production instead of slowing it down.

They need a company that knows what it feels like to be on the front line with borrowers, agents, deadlines, expectations, and pressure.

This episode is about building that kind of environment.

Max breaks down the two principles that guide LoanPeople.

First, customers deserve great rates without sacrificing service.

Second, Realtors and business partners deserve five star communication, real solutions, and on time closings.

Simple ideas, but difficult to execute consistently.

That is where the operating system comes in.

The conversation focuses on what originators actually need in today’s market. Not another vague promise of support. Not another tool that creates more work. Not another platform designed by people who have never carried a pipeline.

The modern originator needs a system that connects pricing, process, communication, service, and execution in a way that helps them grow their business and protect their relationships.

Max also shares what his own production career taught him about discipline, responsiveness, and building trust with referral partners. When you have personally produced at the highest level, you understand where deals break, where communication fails, and where companies create unnecessary friction for their own sales teams.

That perspective now drives how LoanPeople is built.

This episode is for loan officers, branch leaders, mortgage executives, Realtors, and anyone thinking about what the next version of mortgage production should look like.

Because the future is not just about having better technology.

It is about building a better system around the producer.

  • Leading With Value ft. Kevin Peranio

Value in mortgage is not just about rate.

    It is about trust.
    It is about communication.
    It is about execution.
It is about whether the inside of the company is strong enough to deliver what the outside is promising.

In this episode of The MikedUp Show, Michael Kelleher and Michael Zau sit down with Kevin Peranio, Chief Lending Officer and partner at PRMG, for a conversation about leadership, customer experience, accountability, and what it really means to lead with value in today’s mortgage market.

Kevin oversees all production at PRMG and works closely with both sales and operations. His leadership is centered on improving the full customer experience, from the first conversation to the final closing. That includes better reporting, stronger accountability, modern lending technology, consumer facing tools, and a clear connection between what happens behind the scenes and what the borrower actually feels.

As Kevin puts it, the inside drives the outside.

That idea sits at the center of this episode.

Mortgage companies often talk about better service, better technology, better communication, and better execution. But Kevin explains why none of that matters if the internal structure is weak. If sales and operations are disconnected, if reporting is unclear, if teams do not know where the file stands, or if leadership is not aligned, the borrower experience suffers.

Kevin brings the perspective of someone who has seen multiple eras of the mortgage industry.

His career began in 2001. He worked at First Magnus Financial across Texas and Florida, seeing firsthand how different markets behaved during a fast changing lending cycle. He later served as Chief Operating Officer at North Star Lending, helping build a local lender after the financial crisis by applying lessons learned from one of the most difficult periods in mortgage history.

Since joining PRMG in 2010, Kevin helped lead the Southeast Region to become the number one ranked region in the company, reaching that milestone in record time. That success helped make him one of the youngest partners at PRMG. He is also a four time President’s Cabinet member, an NMP Top 40 Under 40 honoree, a national speaker, and a respected industry voice through his Walk and Talk videos on LinkedIn and KP Talks Dollars and Sense on Instagram.

This conversation covers what value actually means in today’s market.

    Not as a slogan.
    Not as a sales pitch.
    As a daily operating standard.

Kevin talks about the importance of overcommunication during difficult markets, why accountability has to exist at every layer of the process, and how leaders can use reporting and technology to create clarity instead of noise.

The episode also looks back at the industry’s past. Kevin reflects on the expansion of the credit box in the mid 2000s, the rise of independent mortgage bankers, the lessons of the global financial crisis, and why responsible lending still matters today.

For loan officers, this episode is a reminder that value is not created by talking louder than the competition. It is created by knowing the product, communicating clearly, solving problems quickly, and making the borrower feel guided through one of the biggest financial decisions of their life.

For leaders, it is a reminder that culture shows up in the file.

If the team is aligned, the customer feels it.

If the team is not aligned, the customer feels that too.
