On the surface the action is slow moving and there is a great deal of moralizing, but it is still compelling. Much like Dickens, many of the characters are stereotyped and the author vilifies them.
I really liked it and was a bit surprised at the ending
Very much a piece of classical literature. I really liked it and was a bit surprised at the ending. I does me good to read something more than fluff once in a while. It is long--and wordy, but typical George Eliot.

I have started reading George Eliot's novels and am not disappointed; she's a truly great author, but her books are very lengthy with much description, so possibly that fact would deter some readers. I'm now reading Daniel Derounda, which is different from "Mill" and "Adam Bede".

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the characters and settings in a small river town in 1870's England. The author's rich prose is evident in descriptions of the countryside through which the river flows, the characterization of the different personages in the village with their opinions and interactions, and most of all with the excellent depiction and understanding of the inner turmoils of the heroine Maggie and her struggle with societal expectations of the time..
... because there seemed to be such a lack of joy in the main character's (Maggie) life
I would have given this book five stars because it is excellently written but I found it very hard to get into because there seemed to be such a lack of joy in the main character's (Maggie) life. She loved so deeply but was always getting misunderstood. I had this book on my kindle so I kept coming back to it when I was in between books. It wasn't till I reached about halfway that I couldn't put it down. If you're looking for a lighthearted read this definitely isn't it but well worth persevering with.
