Land of Nod | Kid's stories

The Miller's Daughters

Listen Later

I am so delighted to finally bring you this story from Poland! I found the most wonderful book of Polish folk tales accompanied by absolutely beautiful and really unique illustrations in the style of paper cut-outs. These are a form of polish folk-art and are made simply with paper and a pair of scissors, and the imagination, skill, and dexterity of the artist! When folk in Poland had no money to buy curtains, they often asked the local folk artist to make a paper design for them instead, which they would then stick to the window! How clever! This story follows the not uncommon plot of a man with three daughters, hoping to marry them off!  Although hopefully, this is becoming an outdated idea now, in many places over the world for many years, marriage was the main way of bringing wealth and security into a family, and therefore many folk tales have this idea as a central theme. This story impressed me because it highlights one girl's desire for education and, therefore,  independence, and there are many girls all over the world fighting for theirs every day still. This story is for them.
