This session in our ongoing series about the ministry of healing is called “Prayers Of Command In Jesus’ Name.” We take a look at the Name of Jesus, and how Christians use it to exercise God’s authority in this world at His leading. Jesus has the “Name above every name…”, but what does that mean for us?
Class notes are available here as a PDF.

EXCERPT: Peter and John weren’t carrying any money, but the riches they did possess were more beneficial for the lame man — they had the right to use the Name of Jesus.
When Jesus received authority from His Father, He didn’t give His authority to the whole human race. Remember, the right to use another man's name first requires that he specifically give you that right. A power of attorney only authorizes you to do something for me if I put your name in it, otherwise, you can’t do anything.
In just the same way, the privilege to use Jesus’ Name only belongs to people who are in a covenant relationship with God through Jesus Christ. It belongs only to people who are in Christ.
Jesus said that the authority of His Name belongs to those who believe in Him. He said, “And these signs will follow those who believe: in My name they will cast out demons… they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover” (Mark 16:17-18 NKJV).
At the end of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus said, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore…” (Matthew 28:18-19 NKJV). That makes no sense unless by saying this He was also giving them the right to use his Name. In other words, He didn’t say, “I have all authority, so I’m going.” No, He was saying, “I have all authority, so I’m sending you!” He wanted His disciples to keep doing what they already were doing, because they had already been using His Name to do works of power. And He wants His followers to use His Name to do the same today.
In the Gospels and the Book of Acts, people led by the Spirit used the Name of Jesus to release the power of God. It was more than just the 12 or the 120 that Jesus was referring to, because He said that the one who believed in Him would do the works He had been doing, and would do even greater works than those. (See: John 14:12)
It's the “family name,” and if you’re in the family you can use the family name.
