"Life holds up mirrors—not to judge us,
but to help us see what we’re ready to transform."
- Glenn S. Cohen
I had a wonderful session recently with an amazing young woman I’ve been working with for a few months. We’ve been exploring some of the personal challenges she’s been facing. Whether I’m meeting with clients in person, on Zoom, or FaceTime, I always start our session with the same simple question:
“How was your week?”
It’s more than just a check-in. It opens the door for new awareness—triggers, insights, or breakthroughs—that might need attention before we move forward.
When I asked her, her eyes sparkled and a wily smile spread across her face. She told me about a moment at work, where she witnessed an interaction between two colleagues. But it wasn’t just a passing observation—she saw herself in it.
That interaction mirrored a pattern she’d been experiencing in her own family.
These are the moments I live for. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching a client light up with self-awareness. My heart fills with joy and gratitude when they recognize life’s reflections and realize they have the power to shift.
As we continued to debrief, she realized it hadn’t been just one moment—she’d experienced three mirror-like interactions within a few days.
Ahh, the Hero’s Journey and the magic of Universal Synchronicity—offering healing, growth, and transformation.
When you work with Neurological Intelligence® (NI), it can sometimes feel like solving a puzzle. The pieces don’t always fit right away. It might take weeks, even months. But if you stay present, engaged, and consistent with the strategies, tools and techniques, something beautiful happens.
The dots connect. The lightbulb goes on.Neurons fire and rewire. And suddenly, a clear picture of your inner world begins to emerge.
Life is a living laboratory, full of mirror moments—reflections that stir something deep in our nervous system. These moments aren’t always comfortable, but they’re not meant to be. They’re invitations.
We get to choose:
· Do we recognize these reflections as old wounds asking to be healed?
· Or do we deflect, blame, and keep spinning the same story on autopilot?
Are we tuned into the context our body is revealing, or are we trapped in the content of our reactive, unconscious patterns?
When clients find themselves in the thick of these moments, I often guide them back to Mindfulness Strategy 13 (from Neurological Intelligence, Volume 2, page 90).
It’s a powerful process for interrupting old narratives and creating new, empowered meanings. In the moment of a trigger, ask yourself:
1. What empowered meaning can I choose right now—one that moves me forward and aligns with what I do want?
2. What life learning lesson is this experience offering me, in this moment, in this “living laboratory?”
3. What mindful, empowered values can I resource to grow stronger and more resilient?
Remember:We can’t always change what happens to us.But we can absolutely change what happens within us.
You hold the power of choice. You are the conscious manager of your inner world.
Be mindful of the meaning you assign to your experiences. That’s where real healing and growth lives. That’s how you move forward—rather than staying stuck in an old, recycled story.
Life is like walking through a hall of mirrors. Sometimes the reflections are distorted, sometimes they’re crystal clear. But they always hold wisdom—if we’re willing to look, learn, and shift.
So I’ll leave you with this question:What mirror has life recently held up for you—and what did it reveal?
