We have a natural, almost biological tendency to look outward when things go wrong. When a project fails, we look at the incompetent team. When a relationship goes sour. We look at our partners flaws. We feel stuck in our careers. We point at the economy or a toxic boss, it is a psychological survival mechanism called external locus of control. That's a fancy way of saying. We'd rather believe the world is happening to us then admit that we are the ones that are steering the ship. This isn't about blaming yourself or carrying the weight of the world. It's about power. If the problem is them, you are helpless until they change. But if the problem is you, you have the keys to the exit door.
