Episode • The mix with Scott Von Ryper
Welcome to the 2nd episode of the series "What it takes to create a record".
We’ll take you behind the scenes of the creation of a record and share and highlight the energies that are needed, their time, their capacity, their magic and spirit.
The joys and the frustrations in creation.
This episode is a conversation with Scott von Ryper (who usually tours with the The Jesus and Mary Chain or creates music with The Black Ryder). Thanks to this wild year 2020 he took over the mix of our record.
We talk about the collaboration of a mix, its surgery and the art connected to this. We're talking about our recent lockdown experiences, how it is to be isolated in Los Angeles as well as the start of his very own new sonic chapter: Dream State Treasure, his first solo album.
So excited for you to listen, for your feedback and questions.
Please welcome:
Scott von Ryper who did the mix for the record "Live at Rockpalast“.

"What it takes to create a record" is a 4-episode podcast series hosted by Laura Carbone, highlighting the roles of some of the major participants involved in the process of bringing recorded music to the public. The series focuses on her 2020 album “Laura Carbone – Live at Rockpalast”, which developed from a major live TV appearance by Laura and her band in late 2019. Having originally planned to record her next studio album in 2020, Covid and lockdown forced Laura to react and rethink how to best reach out to her audience, from her own isolation, to theirs.
Over the four episodes recorded in mid-2020, Laura speaks with her band members, with mixer Scott Von Ryper, with mastering engineer Philipp Welsing, and finally with her visual partner-in-crime, graphic artist and video director Olya Dyer. She deep dives with all of them into their work and the processes, thoughts, feelings and challenges each person, including herself, faced in growing this unlikely seed of an idea into a reality, an actual thing that people all over the globe can now hold in their hands.
Originally recorded for her Patreon patrons whose support contributed to funding the podcast project, Laura is now bringing the series to the public in celebration of the imminent release of the limited-edition, individually colored recycled vinyl version of “Laura Carbone – Live at Rockpalast” on Atlantic Curve records.
Special offering when ordering on her website: The inlaid poster in the vinyl package is hand-signed by Laura and each member of her Rockpalast band… just one way Laura is saying “Thank you” to her fans around the world and reconnecting with them in a healing-hands-on way.
