In recent years, there has been a significant increase in discussions based on media control and privacy issues, particularly in regard to government interaction. These issues have been at the forefront of our minds thanks to the constant accessibility to news sources and social media... but is this really a new issue? In June of 2007, a 702-page document called the Family Jewels was declassified by the United States Central Intelligence Agency detailing a wire-tapping mission carried out by US President John F. Kennedy focused on gathering intel from the media without the public's knowledge. Further analysis of this declassified document led to speculation surrounding media control by the CIA during the Cold War. These covert missions, respectively referred to as Project and Operation Mockingbird, provide insight into just how persistent government control can be. Join us this week as we dive into the Mockingbird Files.
