To cure stuttering, Professor Wendell Johnson at the University of Iowa took it upon himself to torture orphans, with the University denying culpability still nearly 60 years later. The orphans suffered life long issues as a result of the study. We tell a bit of their story on this episode ranging from 1939 to 2007, including the details of the study and we elaborate on the regret that an undergraduate student, Mary James Tudor, felt about the study for years afterwards.
