Superb!
This is one of those books that stays with you long after you read it. Wolf Truly goes to the mountain on his eighteenth birthday intending to take his life. Instead he ends up in the company of three women, all of them becoming lost in the wilderness.
What follows is a gripping story of survival interlaced with glimpses of the lives of all four characters. Wolfâs personal story is told in sections that take us from his childhood to the ânowâ moments of the book, allowing us to understand what brought him to the mountain in a suicidal frame of mind. I enjoyed the way the author wove the two stories together, and was especially fond of Wolfâs close friendship with his friend Byrd.
These characters grow on you. At the beginning, there is no emotional connection to the women, (the book is told from Wolfâs point-of-view throughout), but by the end, I felt like I knew each of them personally. Like Wolf, I grew to understand them through their ordeal on the mountain, and became attached to each.
The ending was superb, and took me by surprise. Bravo to the author. I havenât read a five-star book in a while, but if I could give this one more than 5 stars I would. I highly recommend The Mountain Story for a riveting and engaging read.
Excellent story
I wasn't sure what to expect with this book and was happily surprised. In theory, it's a book about 4 people who survive 5 days on a mountain without food or shelter but it's really a story about much more.
Wolf, an 18 year boy who has spent his childhood with an erratic, undependable father, is feeling like he has lost everything he cares about when he meets 3 women by chance on the top of a mountain. They ask for directions and he tries to help them find their way to the secret lake. Multiple mishaps cause them to become lost, lose their food and spend a harrowing 5 days trying to make it out alive. In that time, each of the 4 reveal things to each other, show their best side and worst side, take care of each other and develop a deep lasting bond.
The story is written as a letter by Wolf to his son who was about to leave for college. Wolf's son has always wanted to hear the whole story about Wolf's time on the mountain but Wolf has never shared the details. In this letter, he explains everything and hopes that his son will be able to accept the truth. I do not want to say more and ruin the story, but I highly recommend really this book.
This story is one that will stay with me a long time.
Most of the elements of a very good story. Just a bit slow at points
Most of the elements of a very good story. Just a bit slow at points. This is essentially a story about fate vs happenstance.
