In March 2018, Marielle Franco, a prominent Brazilian human rights activist and politician, was murdered in mysterious circumstances.

A champion of the favelas, Rio's slum neighbourhoods, Marielle was also a vocal critic of the city's security forces - both official and unofficial - and the high cost in civilian casualties of their war against Rio's drug gangs.

So who killed her and why? And what does the investigation into her death reveal about the state of Brazil today?

Along with rival cartels, it is responsible for tens of thousands of brutal murders and it corrupts almost everything it touches - government, law enforcement, public institutions - with a sea of dirty narco-money.

Coronavirus: Lockdown Italy | People and Power

Thailand has begun lifting restrictions after a steady decline in the number of coronavirus infections.
But many people still need help putting food on the table and some businesses are expected to struggle.
The government will evaluate the situation every two weeks - either determining to further ease the restrictions - or if there is a spike in confirmed cases, they will reimpose some of the restrictions.

Al Jazeera's Scott Heidler reports from Bangkok.
