A university student takes up the cheapest lodging he can find and realizes he is in a strange part of town called the Rue d'Auseil where another tenant, Erich Zann, also lives. Zann is a mute viol player and is tormented by things from another dimension. The narrator is first drawn in by Zann's music but then is horrified to learn how dark the abyss is which has taken Zann's soul.
