David Paulides was formerly in law enforcement. Specifically, starting in 1977 he worked for the Fremont Police Department then transferred to the San Jose Police Department in 1980. He worked in the patrol division, the SWAT Team, the Street Crimes Unit, and eventually ending his career in 2011 as a detective in the Vice/Intelligence Unit.

After leaving the police force, Paulides became a cryptozoologist, researching and authoring books on the topic of Bigfoot, as well as on the disappearance of people to which he attributes a mysterious, unspecified cause or causes. He has a series of self-published books called Missing 411, in which he speculates about the disappearance of people in national parks and elsewhere.

The Missing 411 project started from a meeting with park rangers and slowly evolved into a study on missing people who vanished in the wild, many under highly unusual circumstances. This eventually turned into the Canam Missing Project

The CanAm Missing Project is a group of retired police officers, search and rescue experts (SAR) and other professionals that are dedicated to researching, on scene investigating and generally understanding the issues associated with people who go missing in the wilds of North America. This has typically been a project that is intensely worked by search and rescue teams starting when the victim is reported lost and usually continuing for the following 7-14 days, the case then flounders in a file cabinet. After years of reading thousands of SAR reports, speaking with dozens of victims, we believe the paradigm of this effort needs to change.

Last Case: Dennis Martin – Source: Missing 411 Eastern United States

Went missing on 6/14/69, Spence Field in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, he was 6 years old.

The mysterious disappearance of 6-year old Dennis Martin occurred on June 14, 1969, Father’s Day weekend, in the Great Smoky Mountains. The boy’s family was out on a camping and hiking trip they took every year and on this day, the family had stopped off at a grassy mountain highland meadow along the Appalachian Trail know as Spence Field. As the adults sat out on the grass chatting, Dennis, his brother, and two other boys on the trip thought it would be fun to play a prank on their parents.
