In 1916, a German U-boat sank a merchant marine ship flying Allied colors off the coast of Antarctica, A lone survivor was recovered some two years later in 1918 on an unnamed tidal island just off the north-west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. The survivor identified himself as Edward Allen Oxford.
