The Narrow Road- The Body

One of the most quoted Jewish prayers is called the Shema from Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

The point was that we love God with every part of us. The heart, the center of emotion, the soul, לבבך Their word for the inner thoughts or whole mind, and our strength which is in the body. The NET translations says, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! You must love the Lord your God with your whole mind, your whole being, and all your strength.” No matter how you translate it, it means ALL OF YOU. Every part of you connected and committed. Every part welcome before God. We looked at stories where people who were told their bodies weren’t welcome were connected and healed by Jesus. A woman people thought of as sinful, a man possessed by darkness, a woman thought of as impure because she had been bleeding for 12 years. Our bodies aren’t to be forgotten, shamed, or dishonor, but are welcome with God.

  1. What messages did you receive about your body growing up and what do you think God wants to say to that now? Is there any part of you that feels disconnected that God wants to welcome now?

  2. Your body doesn’t have a concept of God but can only experience God. Have you ever had an experience where it felt like your body connected to God and experienced him?

  3. Our faith should include elements of being faithful to our bodies to the best of our abilities. Part of learning to hear from God is also listening to our bodies. What is one way you could be more faithful to your body? What is something your body needs in the next season? What is something you know would make your body feel better?
