Dr. Glantz conducts research on a wide range of topics ranging from the health effects of e-cigarettes and secondhand smoke (with particular emphasis on the cardiovascular system) to the efficacy of different tobacco control policies. As the tobacco landscape has changed, Dr. Glantz' work has expanded to include cannabis policy, because of the interactions between tobacco and cannabis.

Dr. Glantz is Principal Investigator for the $40 million 10 year Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science (TCORS) that was first funded in September 2013 and renewed for another 5 years in 2018 as part of a first-of-its-kind tobacco science regulatory program by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health

He is author or coauthor of numerous publications on tobacco control, including secondhand smoke, e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products as well as cannabis policy. He has also contributed to research on how the sugar industry has worked to shape the scientific understanding of the effects of sugar consumption.

Working with the UCSF Library, he has taken the lead in making over 90 million pages of previously secret tobacco industry documents available to the entire world via the internet through the UCSF Truth Tobacco Industry Documents Library. More recently, he has worked with the Library and other colleagues to expand collections on the food (sugar), chemical, fossil fuel and pharma industries. This effort has help create a whole new area of scientific investigation based on tobacco industry documents.

He served for 10 years as an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and is an academic editor for PLOS One. He has been a member of the California State Scientific Review Panel on Toxic Air Contaminants since 1986. He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (formerly Institute of Medicine) in 2005.

He has traveled widely and lectured on scientific and policy issues related to e-cigarettes, clean indoor air, smoking in the movies, and effective tobacco and cannabis control strategies. His work has attracted considerable attention from the tobacco industry, which has sued the University of California (unsuccessfully) twice in an effort to stop Prof. Glantz' work.

In our first podcast, Abraham and Jose discuss a student walkout at Sunnyside High School on Nov 4th, 1998 and how it went down. Jose discusses the centripetal force of MEChA that galvanized the blooming of a student conscious to upset the power dynamic. The students began organizing, feeling empowered, and ultimately walked out with a mission to inform the public by practicing direct democracy. 

In the latter half of the episode, Abraham describes a quirky part of his Mexican-American heritage: he was named after a great grand-father, whom he recently learned met an unusual fate in Rural Mexico.  

We finish off by explaining the source of this podcast's name, "The New Americans."

Lil Milagro Henriquez, M.A., is a native New Orleanian, whose family survived Hurricane Katrina, and a 17-year veteran of social and environmental justice activism. Determined to be a catalyst for change, Henriquez resolved to fill the critical gap in education and community development for Oakland youth using her own expertise in disaster preparation and response, youth education, and leadership as well as the expertise of colleagues in complementary fields. In 2017, she founded Mycelium Youth Network, an educational nonprofit designed to integrate place-based ancestral knowledge with hands-on holistic S.T.E.A.M. (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math) programming in order to prepare her community’s youth for a climate-challenged future. Mycelium Youth Network was named one of a handful organizations focusing on youth climate preparedness on the West Coast. As Executive Director, Henriquez is leading the way in youth climate resilience and mitigation work.

Henriquez has worked on a myriad of social justice issues, including access to higher education for low-income people and communities of color, food sovereignty, environmental racism, union democracy and labor organizing, among many others. In 2010, she received a graduate degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology. She reached ABD (All But Dissertation) status for our PhD in Systematic Theology from the Graduate Theological Union. Federico Garcia is from Mendoza, Argentina (land of Malbec wine). Federico emigrated to the United States in 2014, as an industrial engineer by training, his skills and passion were realized in baking. After perfecting empanadas, Federico moved on to pastries. Federico's belief is that farm to fork has allowed for him to create great food which taste even better and delivers to palate. Federico is winner of the calling all dreamers 2021 and hopes to reach the American market to introduce Argentine pastry cuisine.

Luz J. Garcia is the Regional Coordinator for the Latino Coordinating Center for a Tobacco Free California, a statewide program of the California Health Collaborative. Luz graduated Magna Cum Laude from California State University, Long Beach where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration with a minor in Human Resource Management. In the fall of 2019, she also earned a Master of Public Health degree with an emphasis in Community Health Education. In her early career she has worked in advocacy around health and nutrition, domestic violence and sexual assault prevention, mental health, and tobacco control. In Luz's free time Luz travels the world and enjoys learning new languages. 

Kayden Phoenix is a Chicana Writer and Director from Boyle Heights, California. Upon entering the industry, the first thing she noticed was the industry dominated standard- complete with character generalizations. In response, she became a huge advocate for diversity both in front and behind the camera, giving a voice to stories untold. She plans on evening the playing field for the under-represented through her unique and diverse filmmaking.

Kayden's last film, PENANCE, showed at Cinequest, Outfest, won Best LGBTQ, Best Horror, and Grand Jury;  Gun Powder & Sky purchased Penance in 2020. Along with her film work, Kayden  is the Founder of non-profit Chicana Director’s Initiative, writer/creator of the Latina superhero graphic novels, A LA BRAVA, and recipient of Panavision’s New Filmmaker’s Program.

José Angel Gutiérrez, a founding member of the Mexican American Youth Organization (MAYO) in San Antonio in 1967, and a founding member and past president of the Raza Unida Party a Mexican-American third party movement that supported candidates for elective office in Texas, California and other areas of the Southwestern and Midwestern State. 

Gutiérrez is a 1962 graduate of Crystal City High School, Crystal City, Texas and served in the U.S. Army. He has also earned degrees from Texas A&M University-Kingsville (B.A. 1966), St. Mary's University in San Antonio, the University of Texas at Austin (Ph.D. 1976) and the University of Houston Law Center (J.D. 1988). He has done postdoctoral work at Stanford University, Colegio de Mexico, University of Washington and Centro de Estudios Económicos y Sociales del Tercer Mundo in Mexico City in Mexico.

Briana Muñoz is a writer from Southern California. Raised in San Diego, she spent a lot of her time at her mother’s Mexican folklore dance classes and at ranches where her father trained horses into sunset. She is the author of Loose Lips, a poetry collection published by Prickly Pear Publishing (2019) and of Everything is Returned to the Soil published by FlowerSong Press (2021). Dr. Jerry Garcia was born and raised in Quincy, Washington. After graduating high school, he served three years in the U.S. Army at Camp Zama, Japan. Dr. Garcia went on to receive his BA and MA at Eastern Washington University and Ph.D. from Washington State University. He is the Vice President of Medical Education for Sea Mar Community Health Centers and oversees the Sea Mar Museum. Before joining Sea Mar, Dr. Garcia has had academic appointments with Iowa State University, Michigan State University, and is the former Director of the Chicano Education Program and the College Assistance Migrant Program at Eastern Washington University. Dr. Garcia’s research focus is on Chicano History, Latin American History, History of Mexico, Asians in the Americas, immigration, empire, masculinity, and race in the Americas. Dr. Garcia has published 5 books and over 15 peer-reviewed articles. His forthcoming publications include, “Mexicans, Race, and Immigration: Historicizing the Postville, Iowa Raid of 2008”; and is working on a manuscript that examines the Chicano Movement in Washington State.
