The New Republic was founded almost immediately after the Battle of Endor and the death of Emperor Palpatine, although the Galactic Empire wouldn’t surrender until after the Battle of Jakku, one year later. Part of Palpatine’s contingency plan was to bog down his enemies with bureaucracy by making every member of the Empire complicit in war crimes, from the highest ranking generals down to the lowliest administrators. Mon Mothma instead chose to issue pardons to many Imperial citizens, but still held Imperial leadership accountable. She also passed the Military Disarmament Act, greatly limiting the galactic military in strong contrast with the Empire. The unfortunate side effect of that decision was a power vacuum felt especially strong in the Outer Rim, where piracy and lawlessness was rampant. An Imperial Remnant grew in the remote regions of space, but was ultimately defeated. But it would appear that victory was in spite of many New Republic leaders, and not because of them. Senators like Hamato Xiono were happy to ignore growing threats of continuing war in favor of a false peace. The New Republic eventually split into two parties: Centrists, who favored a strong primary government, and Populists, who preferred planetary rights. Many Centrist senators secretly supported the rise of the First Order, assisting the successors of the Galactic Empire to consolidate power and resources until they destroyed the New Republic fleet and its senate on Hosnian Prime. #starwars #newrepublic
