The New Temple

What do we do when our desire to honor God turns into an urge to take control?

In today’s episode of Waiting Well, we sit with King David at a moment of peace and stability. Looking at his own palace, David feels compelled to build a temple for God—a permanent place where God’s people can meet with Him. It’s a sincere desire, but God’s response is unexpected.

Instead of accepting David’s offer, God makes a promise.

God reminds David that He has always been the One doing the establishing—calling David from the pasture, protecting him along the way, and securing his future. Rather than asking David to build a house for Him, God promises to build a house for David—a kingdom that will last forever.

This promise finds its fulfillment in Jesus, the Son of David. While David dreamed of constructing a temple, God sent His Son as the true Temple—the place where heaven and earth meet, and where humanity is fully reconciled to God.

This episode invites us to reflect on how easily we slip into “building mode”—trying to construct our own security, success, or spiritual legacy. Waiting well means learning to trust what God is already establishing in Christ, rather than rushing ahead with our own plans.

As we continue through Advent, we are reminded that God’s greatest work is not something we achieve, but someone we receive.
