There is a moment many leaders know well. A word comes, and for a few hours you know exactly who you are and what you are here for. Then the week starts. Someone does not respond. The door you thought was opening stays closed. And by Thursday the word has thinned out into something you once felt rather than something you presently know.

In this episode I want to name what actually happened there, because most leaders misread it. You did not lose your calling on Thursday. Nothing was revoked. The truth simply never moved from the place where feelings live into the place where thinking happens.

Romans 12:2 locates transformation in the mind, and it uses the word pattern, which is doing quiet work in that sentence. A pattern is not a single thought. It is a thought you have had so many times that you no longer notice yourself having it. Something like, I am not qualified yet. Or, when I have more experience, then I will be ready. You may not have said it out loud in years. It is running anyway, and it is running the room.

I give you three steps for renewing the mind: find the sentence, put the Scripture beside it, and act on the Scripture before the feeling changes. I also tell you about the first bus I ever preached on in Lagos, and why my voice was ahead of my confidence that day.

There is a particular kind of ache that comes from knowing you were called, standing at the door, and watching it stay shut. Not denied. Just delayed. You have prayed, prepared, and positioned yourself, and still the opening you were promised has not come.
