As Christians, how do we parent wisely in this environment?

Our culture has become saturated in all forms of rebellion against God, not the least of which is the LGBT movement. No matter how you raise your children, they will be exposed. Children’s toys, cookies, candy, cereal, clothing lines, and cartoons have all become mouthpieces for sexual perversion. You would literally have to live in a bubble to keep your children from it.

Today I want to encourage Christian parents that this battle is worth your time.

As homeschooling grows at a rapid pace, we are witnessing a growing demand for free money, free materials, free activities to make it easier. In addition to that, we are watching state governments increase their demands on homeschooling parents in the name of “protection” and “academic rigor.”

The freedom to educate your children at home is such a basic right, but it is really controversial in many circles, especially those who view government as the giver of liberty. Homeschool freedom has only existed for the past 30-40 years in America, and with growth has come more threats to that freedom.

Today’s show is about education freedom and education subsidies. I’m joined by Lauren Gideon of Education Independence to discuss the current threats to homeschool freedom and what we can do about it.

I’m going back to basics on today’s episode because I want to take time to introduce and define some popular homeschooling methods, and I’m starting with the Charlotte Mason – or CM - method. Whether you’re new to homeschooling or just new to Charlotte Mason’s ideas, I think you’re going to discover some very useful tips.

I love the CM method because it’s vastly different than the traditional school approach. It is textbook-free, very gentle, using short lessons, real books as the foundation for language arts, trading tests and quizzes for things like narration and dictation, building an appreciation for nature and the arts, and including the whole family together for as many subjects as possible. In fact, many of the methods I share on my blog and this podcast are Charlotte Mason methods.
