The Nikki Clarke Show with Arif Gilany

Listen Later

Arif Gilany is an author and coach. He was inspired to become an author as a child on the border of Iran and Iraq where he grew up. Arif read many novels as a boy that transported his mind to different countries. He remembers reading the novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, where a run away enslaved African American man ran to Canada, gained his freedom and eventually became a judge. Arif was so inspired by this story that he dreamed at 13-years-old of moving to Canada one day, as his country was facing war. He cultivated his love for literature while spending time in hospital as a young healing from injures from the war. Eventually, his dreams were fulfilled when years later as an adult he immigrated to Canada as a Kurdish refugee. He started his new chapter of life in Canada and had to adjust to the many culture shocks and new languages.

However, the biggest hurdle he faced in life after immigrating was loosing his memory as a result of a life-threatening car accident. Arif was in a coma for 10 days and he had to slowly build back his memories which had been wiped out. He used many techniques that he describes in his book. It took two years in total for him to regain his memory and he used different creative tools to sharpen his mind.

All of these life experiences helped him to not take life for granted. He says the biggest lesson he learned was to have gratitude as he sees it a key to the subconscious mind. He also credits his passion for his learning about Canada over the years and building his new family, including having his daughter helped him to grow. But he never forgot his Kurdish roots and he recently took time to visit his family back home in Turkey, Iraq and Iran. That gave him the time to finish his book. Arif feels it’s his duty to share his story and perspective with others to encourage them to try new things, visit new places but always stay grateful.
