The Noonday Demon Podcast

Listen Later

The word acedia means carelessness, callousness, disinterested; it pretty much means you just don't care. It was used by a monk named Evagrius of Pontus in reference to Psalm 91:6 and he coined the term, Noonday Demon. Psalm 91:6 states, in various translations, "nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday" (KJV/NIV) or "Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday" (NLT) The monk took notice of what happens when boredom sets in. When we get up in the morning when God's mercies are new, we're usually energized for a new day. When we go to sleep, we're looking to rest without the cares of the world on our shoulders. At the halfway point or midday, we've got some tiredness setting accompanied by possible carelessness. That's just a snapshot of a day. What if you apply it to a relationship of folks who've been married awhile or a business struggling to stay afloat? It's one thing to be halfway up a mountain, feel exhausted and yet keep going, but what about a marriage, a business or your relationship with God. The Israelites were very well known for complaining about their journey in the desert after the miracle crossing of the Red Sea. Darkness can settle in quickly in the form of just not caring anymore. The Noonday Demon preys on the lethargic, careless and disinterested people. It's easy to get bored in life, but you can't let the Noonday Demon slip in and waste away your relationship with God. Just sayin..... Thanks for your time. Go do something nice for somebody. Jesus loves you and so do we. [email protected]
