Police services around the world arm their police, some to every day officers, others to specialist units, like that of the Metropolitan Police's SO19 firearms unit. We ask these brave men and women to run at the most confronting, dangerous and terrifying threats to keep us safe. In doing so, these highly trained men and women make split second decisions to stop these threats, to prevent loss of life and serious injury.
In today's episode we speak with retired S019 officer and author of 'lethal force' Tony Long. In his career Tony fatally shot three people, all of whom were either committing serious offences, acts of violence with the use of firearms, deadly weapons or were suspected of being in possession of high powered firearms with the intent to kill or seriously hurt others.
Tony talks us through his career as the Metropolitan Police's most controversial marksman, these shootings as well as his ten year battle to clear his name following his last police shooting 100 days out from his retirement which saw him accused and arrested for murder.
