Wonderful

This is one of the best books in the series , though they are all great.

The insight of early Australia is particularly good.

Best narrator I have heard.

Love the unpredictability

I love it that in the 14th book of the series Patrick O'Brian still has the ability to shock, intrigue and surprise. Ric Jerrom is a master reader - keeping the consistency of all the many, many different voices.

Enjoyable

I've followed the series up to here and am full of admiration for the world O'Brian has created. I'm afraid I prefer the other narrators I have been used to with a different edition from the library. Jerrom uses lots of inflection and a rise and fall of volume and tone - always where it seems unnecessary. Jack Aubrey is often given a turn of voice far far too effeminate which really niggles and sometimes I'd prefer he stick to a flatter delivery of accents leaving me able to interpret for myself. I very nearly skipped the book out of frustration! I wont say I got used to it but I'm hooked on O'Brian's world now and it keeps me sane on a long drive! Perhaps, in fairness to Jerrom, I'm just used to my usual narrators now - others clearly really enjoyed his delivery.

Possibly his best book?

I've read this series through 4-5 times and have just got to the end of my second audible play through of the Nutmeg. Although it's quite difficult and mostly subjective to pick a favourite in this remarkable series I think this particular novel is a strong contender. I mean it's got it all, the aftermath of a shipwreck, the acquisition of a new ship, a chase, an action, a rendezvous, a prison break! It's non stop action in this book and yet because it's so far along in the series the subtleties are all there to be had as well. If you are new to the Aubrey Maturin series whatever you do don't try and read / listen to these out of sequence, make sure you start at the start and enjoy!

Perhaps this should be called the 13 gun salute part two as it follows straight on from where that book left off

Excellent listen and a must for anyone who's read the previous book

Far from a criticism but I look forward to more Maritime adventures as this book is set mainly on land
