The one dog is an idea that every dog is fundamentally the same, and shares a single spirit. In other words, no matter how many different dogs you have come across in your lifetime, they are all basically the same dog. Now just like any other idea, this may be true or completely false, but it is this very idea that helps me avoid feeling separate from the rest of the world.
