Publisher's Summary:
The modern Turkish state is one of the premiere powers in the Middle East. She possesses a formidable army and has important relationships and alliances with Western and European powers through her membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). However, many in the West are totally unaware that Turkey, in the very recent past, was the homeland to one of the most enigmatic and powerful empires in history: the Ottoman Empire.
You will hear about....
The images that are evoked when one speaks of the Ottomans in the West is, without fail, Muslims in prayer, harems of exotic women, eunuch guards, lavish palaces, and colorful fashions. All these things, without doubt, were indeed part and parcel of the Ottoman society and their royal court.
Conversely, this is an extremely narrow view. Here we will dive into their world, their history, and their society. We do this to better understand the worlds last great old world empire. The rise and fall of the Ottoman juggernaut informs and influences the Middle East to this day.

COMPLETE RIP OFF

And it is amazing how they achived to hold these hostile groups of today together.
Do not waste your money on this pamphlet
This is not a book, it is a pamphlet! I am going to Turkey in a few weeks and wanted to know the history before I leave. I am disappointed and angry. It is a rip off. Had I paid $3.50 I would still have overpaid. I wrote essays in school that contained more information than this pamphlet provides.

A completely homemade kind of thing, very poorly produced at someone's kitchen table, not even competently. Information seems to have come from wikepedia or world book.

This is a terrific book. I knew a little about the middle east, but this book told me how much more I didn't know. It should be required reading for anyone wanting to discuss or understand today's middle east complex situation and problems from a historical view.
