Set at the end of the American Civil War, it follows a wounded Confederate Sergeant who limps down a dusty road, guitar in hand. He stops at a ruined Southern mansion owned by Lavinia Godwin, a grieving widow whose bitterness toward the Union still burns.

As they talk, a strange procession of soldiers—both Union and Confederate—pass by the house.
