A Note from the Narrator
I enjoyed reading it very much. Emerson Hough was on the frontier at the end of the 19th century, was good friends with Pat Garrett, and saw what he wrote about here. A thoughtful and considered view of the continent as it was eaten up by civilization's arrival, until the frontier was no more. Originally published in 1918. Hough aided in starting the National Parks and Yellowstone, and also the Bison's preservation. A staunch U.S. patriot, he was a captain in the WWI Intelligence Service. Hough wrote for George Bird Grinnell's Field and Stream, and later an Out-Of-Doors column for Sat. Eve. Post and of course numerous novels, including The Mississippi Bubble (1902), Lady and the Pirate (1913) and The Covered Wagon (1922). His other non-fiction books include The Story of the Outlaw (1906) and an autobiography Getting a Wrong Start (1915).
