A ten-year-old boy, footsore from four days of climbing to Delphi, traces three words carved into the temple stone and asks aloud what they mean.

At the Temple of Apollo, the boy reads an old inscription glowing in the morning sun, know thyself, and two priests give him two different answers, one saying it teaches humility before the gods, the other that it commands us to examine our own souls. When his own father cannot say which priest is right, the boy stops believing what he is told, starts to watch his own thoughts, and begins a life spent asking questions.
