We’ve been waiting for this moment since last summer and our interview with Luis from Paizo Publishing. They say every journey begins with a single step, and after that first step in August it was only a matter of time before we revealed our ABCs (Ancestory, Background, Class). But first we take a little time to talk about what we’re looking forward to in 2020, and the danger of high-expectations combined with the complexity of compelling software development. There were some pretty big misses in 2019, and we try to take our lessons learned and not repeat the same mistakes with highly anticipated games for 2020.
Next Anna and Myron review The Quacks of Quendlinburg from North Star Games, a 2018 GOTY winner. Quacks works like a deck-building game, but instead of building a deck of cards you’re a charlatan building a bag of potion ingredients. More powerful potion ingredients can produce more valuable potions and score more victory points. Quacks also offers a clever catch-up mechanic that can really help level the playing field, so you’re never really out of the race.
Finally, we get down to discussing some of the challenges and fun aspects of creating a character for a new gaming system. Tom and Myron felt right at home with the Pathfinder 2.0 system, while Anna and JT didn’t enjoy the lengthy process quite as much. We all agree that the step-by-step instructions in the Core Rulebook combined with the superb Hero Lab Online tool really help in building a good base of understanding for the core rules and game. With our characters built we look forward to what our GM Tom has in store for us!
