Classic Fromm
Published recently in a series of books based on various lectures (circa 1950's), this book is a wonderful challenge to the growing orthodoxy of psychiatric imperialism. Explaining why the scientific method is limited in ever fully understanding the human experience, Fromm appeals to his particular brand of humanistic/existential psychology as an alternative. While not as systematic or exhaustive of Fromm's other volumes (To Have or To Be? (Continuum Impacts); The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness; You Shall Be As Gods: A Radical Interpretation of the Old Testament and Its Tradition; etc), it is a succint presentation of his thought and from the perspective of our life and culture today, this lecture seems to have been an unheard prophetic voice.
Content good; editing atrocious!
I began reading Fromm in University. He was, for me, a cosmopolitan voice of reason, a social critic as well as a doctor of the mind. I have read most of his published work and looked forward to having The Pathology of Normalcy on my Kindle. But that is the problem...This Kindle edition leaves a great deal to be desired. There are numerous errors in standard usage (incorrect choice of prepositions, dangling clauses, failure of agreement between nouns and verbs (person and number) and numerous other equally annoying - and elementary - errors. I have the impression that I am reading a draft manuscript rather than the fully edited, rather elegantly expressed thought of a fine mind. I love my Kindle and I love being able to store entire collections on it but the quality of the writing MATTERS. And this edition is not up to it. I would even be prepared to edit it gratis just to do justice to the late Dr. Fromm's work. Time to stop selling inferior texts, Amazon.
Mental disease and normativity in question, I aggree
It is a very original text, but mostly a personal opinion of its author. I expect additional reinforcements in the future, towards the definitions of mental health and mental disease in order to understand that these concepts on a more solid basis, with deeper scientific and medical foundations.
This will make you hate the world
It's hard to describe Fromm's brilliance in a few sentences, so I won't try. 60 years later, his descriptions of the problems of our society are still accurate and piercing.
Brilliant
In an intelligent society, Fromm's name would probably come up several times a day in general conversation. Probably about 1000 years ahead of his time. We are advancing intellectually aren't we? Anybody?
